How many amps is a household circuit?
Most 120-volt branch circuits in a home are rated 15 or 20 amps. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas use 20-amp circuits. Dryers, ranges, water heaters and heat pumps run on 240-volt circuits with double-pole breakers.
What does a GFCI outlet do?
A GFCI cuts power in a fraction of a second when it senses current leaking to ground, which protects people from shock. Code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, outdoors and other damp locations. Surge protection is a separate device at the panel.
What does an AFCI breaker do?
It detects arcing inside a circuit, the kind of fault that starts fires inside walls, and trips. Bedrooms and most living areas in newer homes require them.
When does a panel need an upgrade?
When breakers trip often, the panel has no open spaces, the service is 100 amps or less and you are adding a generator, heat pump or hot tub, or the panel is a brand with a known failure history. We replace fuse boxes and upgrade service entrances.
Is aluminum wiring a problem?
Aluminum branch wiring went into many homes built from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. Connections at outlets and switches can loosen and overheat. The fix is a proper repair at each connection or a rewire, and it starts with an inspection.
